D Gater - Walking Sticks

Demonstrating Stickmaker
Probably the first men who walked took a branch to help them stand, that stick quickley became their first weapon. The stronger the man the bigger and heavier the stick. The largest and most ornate belonging to the cheif. Over the years sticks evolved into a badge of office, sticks of different shapes and sizes denoting differant jobs. The most well known being the shepards crook. From the time of HenryVIII sticks or canes became a fashion accessory people 'wore a cane'. Sticks and canes have been hiding places for all manner of things, secret weapons, money, drinking flasks and even musical instruments. Sticks are made in numerous styles and shapes, with tops made from all manner of different materials wood, bone and horn being the most popular. Stickmaking has become a very popular pastime which led to the formation of the british stickmakers guild in 1984 it now has a current membership of over 2000. So come along and see me at the show and i will be demonstrating the art of stickmaking.
