Pauline Baines Pyrography on Leather I first started my craft business in 1980 by making bookmarks and key fobs which I initially supplied to a small craft shop. Over the past 29 years my range has gradually increased to a comprehensive selection of purses, wallets and bags, all of which I decorate individually. I now attend around 12 craft fairs a year which keeps me busy as I do not have outworkers to help – I have painted every item myself without use of transfers or brands. Each design is applied first by freehand sketching with a pencil, faint burning then painting using acrylic paints. Finally I use the Pyrography Machine – or Poker – to burn the outline and apply detail and shading. Once completed, the design is permanent but I do condition the leather with a wax polish. I have over 20 different original designs, mainly with birds and animals from Kingfishers to Mice and Bumble Bees. I have done many commissions from family pets to company logos and am always open to suggestions for new designs.
