Spoon Carving

A Gift For The Bride...
The skill of spoon carving finds it's roots in the traditional art of making love spoons, which is thought to have its origins in 16th century Wales. The earliest known example is dated from 1667. A carved spoon was given by a young man to a lady of his fancy as a symbol of love and devotion that would hopefully lead to a lifelong togetherness.
Traditional Love Spoons
The lovespoon has evolved from purely domestic origins. Carvers made “cawl” or soup spoons that were made for regular household usage. But over time, this simple carving was used in more and more elaborate ways to convey messages of love and goodwill.
The basic carved spoon slowly began to change. Handles were made longer and wider, and symbols were used, not only to show romantic feelings but often to express the profession and interests of the carver.
Lovespoons have continued to be treasured gifts to the present day; they are still given as tokens of love but have found niches in other areas of art and use for other occasions.

Spoons can be used to commemorate a wedding, christening, birth or anniversary; they can be given as a housewarming gift or as a reminder as a visit to Wales. Some people collect them simply for their beauty and artistic quality that is found in each hand crafted spoon.

Spoons range in size from about 1 to 20 inches in length and their artistry and design ranges from a simple heart to a combination of hearts, diamonds, stars, dragons, bells, bows, crowns and much more, so that a description would really be superfluous.
